We have already discussed Importance of counseling, Benefits of Counseling and various methods of Counseling.

Now we will discuss Impact of over Control on Children/Kids/Teenager/Adult behavior.

Control on Child activity is important but over control on Child activity may lead anonymous behavior changes. Similarly Learning is also important but over pressure on learning/development may lead Child behavior changes.

Controlling parenting can impact in multiple ways of Parents as well as Children life including social & emotional well-being, relationships, problem-solving skills, academic and career decisions, and overall satisfaction.  

Evaluating level of control in parenting will help to explore and overcome the consequence and maintain coping strategies to enhance the overall well-being of family.

Signs of Controlling Parents

Harsh Punishment or very little privacy are few signs of controlling parents and can be considered normal being happening for generations. Reason behind this may be Child security or anything else can lead to multiple negative results.

Here are few signs of controlling parents:

  • Full interference: Dictate child in all aspects like academic, social, emotional and career point of view.
  •  Manipulation: Use of manipulation tactics is way to control the Child. Parents keep on reminding the child about an obligation they have.
  • Offering Conditional love: Offering love against certain condition like when you win certain competition or get certain marks/grading.
  • Compliance: Setting firm, unrealistic rules that cannot be interrogated.
  • High expectation: High demanding parenting where in demanding more from Children.
  • Lack of Motivation: Never ready to listen Children or adults and not providing them space for their viewpoints, aspiration and other aspects.
  • No privacy: Privacy not allowed to Child and everything needs to be shared.
  • Not allowing Independent decision: Discouraging child for any decision unless parents agree whether the decision impacts child or not.
  • Unachievable standards: Sense of pressure to perform and maintain high standards in all aspects like sports, social or family obligations.

Parental Control

Controlling impacts Children, Kids, Teenager and adults differently affecting them socio-emotionally. Parenting is to Nurture Children/kids, make them skilled for problem solving and manage stress and anxiety.

Types of parental control are:

    Behavioral control: In Behavioral control parental efforts are focused to control Child’s behavior. Improper behavioral control w.r.t to Child’s age may limit certain opportunities to build freedom and impact child Socio-emotional development.

    Psychological control: Psychological control focus to control children to comply through manipulation. Key tactics are shaming, emotional blackmail, feeling of guiltiness.

    Over parenting: Over parenting involves High level of emotional support, inversely less autonomy due to over-involvement.

Impact of Controlling Parents on Children

Over parenting discourage Children from making Self decision, learning to handle social changes and how to cope up with emotions. Over parenting may also lead to dependence and emotional insecurity that is base for adulthood.
